Westminster Town Hall Forum Lunchtime Event: Immigrants as Pillars of Democracy with Kica Matos

Thursday, October 1, 2026

11:00AM - 1:00 PM

Westminster Town Hall Forum

1200 South Marquette Avenue

Minneapolis, Minnesota, 55403

After the June 2026 Supreme Court ruling on birthright citizenship, Kica Matos observed how fragile foundational constitutional guarantees have become, with the struggle for immigrant rights serving as a central pillar of the broader pro-democracy fight.

Named one of Time magazine’s most influential people of 2026, Matos is president of the National Immigration Law Center and the Immigrant Justice Fund. She also is a Distinguished Practitioner at Yale University’s Brady Johnson Program in Grand Strategy. She has a front-row seat to the immigration debate and will address immigrant rights and how “We the People” are ALL the people.

Her bold vision and engagement in broad-reaching advocacy offers hope to many youths and immigrants facing challenges under the nation’s current immigration laws.

Matos is a recipient of the John F. Kennedy New Frontier Award and was inducted into the Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame in 2021. She has a bachelor’s degree from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand; a master’s degree from the New School; and a law degree from Cornell Law School.

The session’s moderator will be The Rev. Dr. Jessica Patchett who is senior pastor at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Minneapolis and was previously senior pastor at Christ Presbyterian Church in Madison, Wisconsin. She holds a Master of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary and a Doctor of Ministry in Gospel and Culture from Columbia Theological Seminary.

Yale and America: From Elihu Yale to Elga Wasserman

Saturday, April 18

Lecture: 3-5pm

Reception to Follow
United Methodist Church

720 Grand Avenue, West Des Moines, Iowa 50265

Free to attend. Please register below

For our alums in southern Minnesota and the Dakotas, please join the Yale Club of Iowa as they host Professor Jay Gitlin ’71, Department of History, Yale University.

Professor Jay Gitlin ’71 explores the intertwined histories of Yale University and American culture from the eighteenth century through the twentieth, drawing on his acclaimed Yale seminar Yale and America. The lecture blends intellectual history, institutional biography, cultural analysis, and personal reflection, offering compelling context for alumni of all backgrounds.

The lecture explores Yale’s history and cultural influence through several interwoven themes, including Elihu Yale and the University’s eighteenth-century origins in global trade and intellectual exchange; the intellectual and social lives of women at Yale prior to formal coeducation, with particular attention to figures such as Olivia Day and the Gallinippers; the roles of Henry Luce and Juan Trippe in shaping modern media, aviation, and the global information society (often described to students as “Yale Mad Men, Pan Am, and the Information Society”); and the contrasting visions of Yale embodied by William F. Buckley Jr., William Sloane Coffin, and Jean-Paul Sartre in debates over freedom, responsibility, and culture. Professor Gitlin also offers brief personal reflections from his junior year at Yale, including memories of the May Day protests and the transition to coeducation, along with a light touch of Yale lore via an anecdote involving Obadiah Nimblechops of the Yale Hexahedron Society. Prof. Gitlin will also speak on the French presence in the Upper Mississippi Valley, drawing on his book The Bourgeois Frontier: French Towns, French Traders, and American Expansion (Yale University Press), which situates Iowa and Nebraska within a broader continental history.

Following the Q&A, Professor Gitlin and his wife, Ginny Bales, are pleased to offer a lighthearted musical coda: student-written parody lyrics set to Cole Porter tunes, reflecting Yale student life across generations.

A reception of light refreshments and snacks will follow and all are welcome to stay and enjoy our Yale community.

Professor Marni Sandweiss

Thursday, April 9 @ 7PM
Macalester College

John B Davis Lecture Hall
(located in Ruth Stricker Dayton Campus Center)
130 S Macalester Street, St. Paul, MN 55105

The Yale Alumni Association of the Northwest (YAANW), Brown Club of Minnesota, and Macalester College invite you to a talk with Marni Sandweiss, Professor of History Emerita at Princeton University and founding director of The Princeton & Slavery Project. Professor Sandweiss received her B.A. from Harvard in 1975 and her Ph.D. from Yale 10 years later. She will speak about her book "The Girl in the Middle: A Recovered History of the American West."

The book, published last year, uses a single photograph of a native girl and six white men taken at Fort Laramie in 1868 as a prism to examine the Westward expansion of the United States after the Civil War at the expense of the Native American population. Here's how it’s described by The American Scholar: 'Sandweiss’s forensic investigation of a single photograph widens the aperture to depict an astonishingly intertwined frontier society where everyone—soldier, trader, photographer, man, woman, Native, mixed-race, or white—was connected to most everyone else. The result is a fascinating snapshot of this “oddly intimate” world, a bubbling cauldron of people constantly on the move, in contact or in conflict, their lives beset by unremitting public and familial violence.'

After the 7 pm presentation, light refreshments will be shared and there will be books available for purchase. Tickets are $15, please register below.

Parking is available in Visitor Lots 1, 2 and 3. Please proceed from the lots to the Campus Center and check in at the main door.

Macbeth: A chilling tale of ambition

When three witches utter a surprising incantation — “All hail Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter” — a soldier and nobleman’s course is forever altered. Macbeth and his ambitious wife seek to kill King Duncan and usurp the throne. The pair is successful, but their satisfaction is fleeting, and the two embark on a perilous path of destruction. Macbeth is soon haunted by the bloodstained ghost of a former enemy, and the crown grows heavy with the weight of his insecurity and paranoia. Shakespeare’s thrilling story of treachery and ambition explores the relationship between power and corruption, revealing the villainy that can emerge when power is sought.

Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn and cauldron bubble....

... and see you at the scottish play!
