Kenneth Freed ‘83, MM ‘87 - President

Kenneth Freed is an orchestral player and conductor, chamber musician, educator and social entrepreneur. He has been a member of the Minnesota Orchestra viola section since 1998. Before he joined the orchestra, Freed played second violin in the internationally acclaimed Manhattan String Quartet.


denise levitan ‘06 - VICE PRESIDENT

Denise Levitan was a geology and geophysics major at Yale and also holds a PhD in geoscience from Virginia Tech. She is a devotee of bar trivia, winner of multiple Minnesota State Fair crafts ribbons, and an environmental scientist at an engineering consulting company. She has been a resident of St. Louis Park since 2014.


Rudy Hokanson, M.Div. ’74; M.B.A. ’81 - secretary

Rudy Hokanson had a career in parish/campus ministry and then on Wall Street in the Midwest and New York. He has served on various non-profit boards as well as his local school board. Rudy is retired and serves his community in large part through the efforts of YAANW where he has been Secretary of the board and Coordinator of Divinity School alumni activities, an interviewer for Yale and involved in Day of Service projects and other volunteer efforts. He and his wife Susan Miller, M.A.R. ’73; M.Div. ’81, live in the Twin Cities area and have two grown children and five grandchildren.


Nick Johnson ‘74 - Treasurer

Nick Johnson graduated from Yale College in 1974 and is currently a Senior Business Systems Analyst at Ameriprise Financial.


Bob Ames ‘03

Bob Ames is a 2003 graduate of the Yale School of Management. He worked as a CPA with a Big 4 firm where he helped develop & open offices in the former Soviet Union, subsequently built renewable energy and chemicals businesses together with agricultural firms, and now provides consulting services in the renewable energy, agriculture and food biotech spaces. Bob and his wife Elena reside in St. Paul with their 2 daughters.


Tyler blackmon ‘16

Tyler Blackmon currently serves as the Finance Director of the Minnesota DFL, a natural fit for him after serving as the president of the Yale College Democrats and earning degrees in both Economics and Political Science from Yale College. Tyler was born and raised in Georgia but currently lives in Saint Paul with his fiancé, Kevin Vargas (PC ‘15), and his cat, Reginald.


Rick Luis ‘67

Retired (after 38 years trying cases) Judge Rick Luis '67 has been on the YAANW Board, and has served as a YAA Assembly Delegate for our Association or his Yale College Class since the early 1990s. He was President of the Association for five years ,1999-2003, and has been an admissions interviewer and an informal athletic recruiter for Yale throughout his Board service. A native of Shakopee, Rick lives in Little Canada with his wife, Nita Luis.


Malcolm McDonald ‘58

Graduate of Yale College. Class of 1958, magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, MBA from Graduate School of Business Administration at Harvard Univetsity, 1960. Worked at the First National Bank of Saint Paul from 1960 to 1977 and then at Space Center, Inc. to 2004. Widower with three children.  Former President of the YAANW, fifty years interviewing Yale applicants, Treasurer of Bulldogs on the Lakes, Inc.


Diane Pike PhD ‘81

Diane Pike is Professor of Sociology at Augsburg University and lives in Saint Paul. Husband Steve is a Physics PhD from Yale and daughter Chelsea is Yale (Stiles) 2011. Serving on the YAANW Board is a wonderful opportunity to be serve both Minnesota and Yale and to express gratitude for the good fortune to have received such an amazing education.


Rohan Preston ‘89

Preston spent his childhood in Jamaica and adolescence in New York before earning an English degree at Yale. He has served on the Pulitzer Prize jury for drama. He has been a Star Tribune theater critic since 1998.


Kwame osei Reed M.Div. ‘79

Reverend Kwame Osei Reed, Esquire, is an ordained Minister in the United Church of Christ. As an attorney, he is an active member of the Virginia State Bar. Formerly known as Bobby Reed, Kwame was ceremonially adopted into the Ashanti (nee Asanti) people of Ghana, where he was given the name Kwame Osei, which became his legal given names. He and his wife, Rita Wallace Reed, M.D., MPH, a native of Ghana, are very involved there where they constructed a family practice clinic in the West Lagon Section of Accra, the capitol city.


Larry Schuster ‘68

Larry Schuster has been a Senior Consultant in Endocrinology and Metabolism at the Schuster Clinic for Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders since 1978. Although Dr. Schuster’s practice is almost entirely outpatient, he is on the medical staffs of Abbott-Northwestern Hospital, Fairview-Southdale Hospital, Fairview Ridges Hospital, North Memorial Medical Center, and Maple Grove Hospital.


George Slade ‘83

George Slade is a writer, historian, and curator based in Minneapolis. George majored in American Studies while an undergrad at Yale.


Dorothy Whelan ‘81

Dorothy P. Whelan is a Principal in the Twin Cities office of Fish & Richardson. Ms. Whelan co-chairs the firm’s Post-Grant Practice Group. She was the first woman to serve on the firm’s Management Committee, and also served on the firm’s Compensation Committee.
